Big Stripers On the Flats
June 1997
This 33 inch Striper was caught near Barnstable Harbor. About an hour after the tide turned, a sandbar appeared on the flats. Beaching my canoe, I cast into the rip that formed as the water receded and landed a nice 30 incher and then this one. Between the two fish, I had one other hit where the fish quickly spit the fly.
Rips form as the tide moves over varying depths of water. shallow water moves faster than deep water and as a resuslt, distinct lines (seams) of turbulent water form. Fish gather here on the slow moving side and wait for baitfish to be washed into their mouths.
Your streamer pattern placed at the right spot could bring tremendous results
